FAENA Miami Beach Trip Report – An Extraordinary Luxury Hotel & Cultural District

USA

Normally, I only publish hotel reviews of properties where I have personally stayed. However, as I undertake more hotel inspections through Fora Travel, I've decided to introduce a new Trip Report format. This will follow much the same approach as my hotel reviews, with the same level of detail, insight and analysis, focusing on properties that particularly impress me and that I believe would be an excellent fit for many of my clients.

This week, while in Miami for Fora Live Forum 2026, I had the opportunity to enjoy an extensive visit to FAENA Miami Beach. And I have to say, I loved what I discovered, for so many reasons.

Lush tropical garden at FAENA Miami Beach with red outdoor seating and Damien Hirst's golden mammoth sculpture in a glass enclosure.

I was already familiar with the FAENA name from Buenos Aires, having stayed at a neighbouring hotel during a visit to the Argentinian capital several years ago. But what makes FAENA particularly interesting is that it is so much more than simply a luxury hotel.

Founded by Alan Faena, the brand has developed a distinctive approach to hospitality, creating entire cultural districts that bring together luxury accommodation, art, architecture, gastronomy, entertainment and retail. With a presence in Buenos Aires, Miami Beach and now New York, FAENA has established an identity that goes well beyond the traditional hotel experience.

In Miami Beach, this vision is perhaps most evident. The FAENA District stretches across six blocks of Miami Beach, representing a billion-dollar development that encompasses the hotel itself, a cultural and events centre, curated retail spaces, private residences and even an architecturally significant parking structure. It's an ambitious concept, and one that gives Faena a very different character from the many other luxury hotels along Miami Beach.

The Hotel

Location & The FAENA District

A Six-Block Cultural Destination in Miami Beach

FAENA Miami Beach occupies a prime oceanfront location in Mid-Beach, slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of South Beach, but still within easy reach of everything Miami has to offer. South Beach is approximately 10 minutes away by car, while the fashionable Design District, with its luxury boutiques, galleries and restaurants, is around 15–20 minutes away.

Miami is also an incredibly easy city to get around using Uber, making it simple to explore different neighbourhoods without needing to hire a car. This is particularly appealing if, like me, you enjoy combining time at a luxury hotel with discovering the wider destination.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is approximately 20–30 minutes away by car, depending on traffic, making FAENA particularly convenient for international arrivals. For those travelling privately, Opa-locka Executive Airport is another option, with a second fixed-base operator (FBO) facility expected to open nearby.

And for a rather more extraordinary arrival, FAENA can even accommodate guests arriving by boat, using a dock behind the FAENA Forum. Helicopter arrivals can also be arranged through a floating helipad service, adding another dimension to the hotel's approach to ultra-luxury hospitality.

What really sets FAENA apart, however, is the wider six-block FAENA District, a billion-dollar development that extends well beyond the hotel itself. The concept brings together hospitality, art, architecture, culture, retail and residential living, creating something that feels almost like a destination within a destination.

The FAENA Forum, designed by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas and his firm OMA, is a striking cultural and events space, hosting everything from art exhibitions and performances to weddings and private celebrations. Nearby, the FAENA Bazaar offers three floors of curated retail, with Alan Faena's own office occupying the upper floor.

Even the parking structure, FAENA Park, has been designed as an architectural statement by OMA, incorporating an innovative hydraulic system for moving vehicles. It's a perfect example of how the brand approaches even the most functional elements of the district as opportunities for creativity.

The district also includes Casa FAENA, a smaller, historic boutique hotel with terracotta floors and four-poster beds, offering a more accessible way to experience the FAENA atmosphere. Then there's FAENA House, an exclusive collection of private residences designed by Norman Foster, further reinforcing the architectural credentials of the development.

And, of course, there's the beach. FAENA enjoys access to an impressive stretch of Miami Beach's white sand, with approximately 100,000 square feet of beachfront space dedicated to the hotel's beach experience.

For me, this is what makes the location so appealing. You're not simply staying at a luxury beachfront hotel; you're immersing yourself in a carefully curated world of design, culture, dining and entertainment, while still having the rest of Miami within easy reach.

“FAENA Miami Beach is so much more than a luxury beachfront hotel. It’s an entire world of art, architecture, culture and entertainment, all brought together in one extraordinary six-block district.”

Arrival & First Impressions at FAENA Miami Beach

A Grand Entrance, Without a Reception Desk

Arriving at FAENA Miami Beach, you immediately get a sense of the building's history. Originally opened in 1948 as The Saxony Hotel, the property was once one of Miami Beach's most glamorous destinations, welcoming celebrities and entertainers during the city's golden age. I particularly loved that the original Saxony signage can still be seen as you approach the hotel, a wonderful reminder of its heritage.

The building underwent a remarkable transformation before reopening as FAENA in 2015, with filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and his wife, acclaimed costume and production designer Catherine Martin, helping to create its distinctive interiors. Their theatrical influence is apparent from the moment you step inside.

Rather than entering a conventional hotel lobby, you find yourself in The Cathedral, a magnificent entrance hall with soaring gold-leaf columns, intricate mosaic flooring and eight extraordinary floor-to-ceiling murals by Argentine artist Juan Gatti. The artwork is rich in colour and symbolism, depicting everything from tropical landscapes and wildlife to mythological imagery. It's quite a spectacular first impression.

And then your eyes are drawn straight ahead, through the glass doors at the far end of The Cathedral, to one of the hotel's most remarkable features: Gone But Not Forgotten, a nearly 10-foot-tall woolly mammoth skeleton by Damien Hirst, covered in 24-karat gold and displayed within a huge glass enclosure. Beyond it, you catch glimpses of the palm-lined pool area and the Atlantic Ocean.

What you won't see, however, is a traditional reception desk.

FAENA has deliberately reimagined the arrival experience. Instead of queuing at a counter, guests are welcomed into the library, where check-in takes place while seated, accompanied by a welcome drink. For guests staying in the hotel's top suites, an in-room check-in can also be arranged.

It's a much more personal and relaxed introduction to the hotel, and one that I particularly appreciate. After a long journey, being welcomed into a comfortable space rather than standing at a reception desk is exactly the sort of thoughtful hospitality that makes a difference.

For me, the arrival experience perfectly captures what FAENA is all about. There's a real sense of theatre and occasion, but also an underlying emphasis on personal service. You know almost immediately that this isn't going to be an ordinary luxury hotel experience.

Rooms & Suites at FAENA Miami Beach

Bold Design, Ocean Views & Exceptional Space

With just 180 rooms and suites, FAENA Miami Beach is surprisingly intimate, particularly when you consider the scale of the wider FAENA District and everything the hotel has to offer. What I found especially interesting during my inspection was the emphasis on spacious accommodation, with 121 of the 180 rooms classified as Junior Suites.

The design is unmistakably FAENA. Rich colours, bold patterns, luxurious fabrics and Art Deco influences combine to create interiors that are glamorous, theatrical and full of personality. This is certainly not a hotel that follows the increasingly common minimalist approach to luxury. Instead, there's a wonderful sense of individuality, with every detail contributing to the overall experience.

Even the entry-level rooms are generously proportioned, averaging around 500 square feet (46 square metres), with king-size beds and beautiful Carrara marble bathrooms. Thoughtful touches include Toto toilets, twice-daily housekeeping and 24-hour in-room dining. The attention to detail extends to the welcome experience, with FAENA's signature red roses and personalised amenities adding an extra layer of hospitality.

One feature I particularly appreciated is that all Premier Oceanfront accommodation has furnished balconies, something that was incorporated during the building's restoration. For me, having private outdoor space overlooking the Atlantic is a significant advantage, especially when staying somewhere with Miami's wonderful climate.

Premier Oceanfront Corner Junior Suite

This is one of the categories I would particularly recommend to clients. The corner positioning provides beautiful wraparound ocean views, while the layout includes a bathroom and an additional half bathroom, making it especially practical for couples who appreciate a little more space.

I was told that this is one of the hotel's most sought-after categories, with particularly strong demand from returning guests. Having explored the accommodation options, I can certainly understand why.

Premier Oceanfront Corner Suite

For clients looking for a separate bedroom and living space, the Premier Oceanfront Corner Suite would be another of my top recommendations.

This is the hotel's most popular one-bedroom suite category, combining generous accommodation with spectacular ocean views. Importantly, this is also where FAENA's dedicated butler service comes into play.

Butler service is included from the full suite categories upwards, with a 24-hour butler line available to assist with everything from unpacking and restaurant reservations to arranging personalised experiences. It's another example of the hotel's emphasis on highly individualised service.

Signature Suites & Penthouses

At the very top end of the accommodation offering, FAENA has some truly extraordinary options.

The two-bedroom Maximilian Suite is particularly impressive, with a grand living area, full chef's kitchen and extensive space for entertaining. There are only three of these suites, and with nightly rates reaching five figures, they are very much aimed at guests seeking an exceptional level of luxury and privacy.

For larger families or groups travelling together, the hotel also offers three-, four- and five-bedroom penthouse accommodation, providing the opportunity to enjoy the FAENA experience on a much grander scale.

Connecting rooms are also available across selected categories, although these aren't always immediately obvious when looking at the online booking options. This is something I would particularly recommend discussing before booking if travelling as a family.

My Room Recommendation

For most of my luxury travel clients, I would start by looking at the Premier Oceanfront Corner Junior Suite. It offers an excellent balance of space, ocean views and comfort, without necessarily stepping up to the cost of a full one-bedroom suite.

However, for those who appreciate having a separate living area and the additional attention of a dedicated butler, the Premier Oceanfront Corner Suite would be my preferred choice.

One of the real advantages of having undertaken such a detailed hotel inspection is being able to understand the differences between room categories beyond what you see in photographs. At FAENA, I think choosing the right accommodation is particularly important, and it's something I'd be very happy to advise on when arranging a stay.

Restaurants & Bars at FAENA Miami Beach

A Culinary Journey from Argentina to Asia, with a Touch of Miami Glamour

One of the things that really impressed me during my inspection of FAENA Miami Beach was the sheer variety of dining and drinking experiences available. This is certainly not a hotel where the restaurants feel like an afterthought. In fact, the culinary offering is very much part of the wider FAENA experience, with internationally acclaimed chefs, extraordinary interiors and some wonderfully theatrical spaces.

From Argentinian live-fire cooking to contemporary Asian cuisine and an intimate six-seat Japanese omakase experience, there's an impressive choice. And that's before you consider the hotel's glamorous bars, which are destinations in their own right.

Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann

Perhaps the hotel's best-known restaurant, Los Fuegos is overseen by legendary Argentinian chef Francis Mallmann, whose passion for cooking over open flames has made him internationally renowned, including through his appearance on Netflix's Chef's Table.

The restaurant embraces traditional South American live-fire cooking techniques, with an emphasis on wood-fired grills and bold flavours. It's also the hotel's main restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I particularly liked the veranda seating, overlooking the swimming pool and gardens. It's a beautiful setting for a leisurely breakfast or an evening meal, and offers a lovely connection between the hotel's indoor and outdoor spaces.

We had the pleasure of dining at Mallmann's restaurant at The Vines Resort & Spa in Mendoza, Argentina, a few years ago, so I was particularly excited to see his culinary influence here at FAENA Miami Beach.

Pao by Paul Qui

For something completely different, Pao brings the creativity of award-winning chef Paul Qui to FAENA Miami Beach, combining Asian influences with European and American culinary techniques.

Bar at Pao by Paul Qui at FAENA Miami Beach, featuring a gold-toned ceiling, decorative lighting and colourful bottles.

The restaurant's interiors are as memorable as the food concept, with a striking golden unicorn sculpture by Damien Hirst taking centre stage. It's another example of how FAENA seamlessly incorporates contemporary art into the dining experience.

Open Wednesday to Saturday, Pao has established itself as one of Miami's notable fine-dining destinations, and would be high on my list for clients looking for a special evening.

El Secreto Omakase

One of the most intriguing dining experiences at FAENA is El Secreto, an intimate Japanese omakase restaurant with just six seats.

The experience features approximately 16 courses, with premium seafood flown in from Japan, and is priced at around $295 per person.

There are normally two evening seatings, at 6.30pm and 9pm, Thursday to Saturday. With only six places available at each sitting, advance reservations are essential, and the entire restaurant can also be booked privately.

A particularly good suggestion from the hotel team was to combine the earlier omakase seating with an evening performance at the FAENA Theater, creating a rather special night out without ever needing to leave the property.

Tree of Life Sunbar

For something more relaxed, the Tree of Life Sunbar provides a wonderful outdoor setting for drinks and lighter dishes throughout the day.

At its centre is a real tree, approximately ten years old, creating a distinctive focal point within the tropical surroundings. It's exactly the sort of space where I could imagine spending a leisurely afternoon enjoying the Miami sunshine.

Campo at Casa FAENA

A short distance from the main hotel, within the wider FAENA District, Campo offers another dining option at the more intimate Casa FAENA property.

It's a useful addition to the district's restaurant collection, particularly for guests who enjoy exploring different settings rather than dining in the same hotel every evening.

The Living Room

If there's one bar that really captures the glamorous personality of FAENA Miami Beach, it's The Living Room.

This is the hotel's principal lounge and bar, with richly decorated interiors, sumptuous furnishings and an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and wonderfully theatrical.

Live music and DJs provide entertainment every evening, making it a natural place for pre-dinner cocktails or a late-night drink.

One of my favourite details is the collection of Storm Chandeliers by Italian artist Alberto Garutti. These extraordinary installations are digitally connected to weather conditions in the Argentinian Pampas, flickering whenever thunderstorms occur thousands of miles away.

It's a wonderfully imaginative detail, and exactly the sort of thing that makes FAENA so distinctive.

Saxony Bar

For guests looking for a more energetic late-night experience, Saxony Bar offers a completely different atmosphere.

Named in tribute to the building's original Saxony Hotel, this intimate venue features DJs and a glamorous nightclub-style setting, with music continuing until approximately 4am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Table reservations are available, and it's another example of how FAENA caters to guests who want much more than simply a luxury hotel room and a good restaurant.

La Cava – Private Dining

One other space that particularly caught my attention was La Cava, the hotel's extraordinary private wine cellar and dining room.

Accommodating approximately 25–30 guests, it's an atmospheric setting for private celebrations, special dinners or exclusive events.

The room features an impressive dining table co-designed with Brad Pitt, alongside extensive wine displays and private wine lockers.

For clients arranging milestone celebrations or travelling with a larger group, this is certainly a space worth considering.

My Dining & Bar Recommendations

What I particularly like about FAENA's dining collection is that each venue offers something genuinely different. It's an impressive collection, and one that reinforces my feeling that FAENA Miami Beach is as much a dining and entertainment destination as it is a luxury beachfront hotel.

FAENA Theater & Entertainment

Cabaret, Glamour & a Touch of Old Hollywood

Entertainment is an integral part of the FAENA experience, and the hotel's spectacular FAENA Theater is perhaps the best example. Inspired by Europe's grand opera houses and the glamour of Old Hollywood, this intimate venue hosts elaborate cabaret productions combining music, dance, theatrical performances and stunning costumes.

During my visit, the current production was Obsession, part of the theater's ninth season of performances. Shows generally take place Thursday to Saturday, with an adults-only audience, and the venue can also be hired for private celebrations and corporate events.

I particularly loved the idea of combining dinner at one of FAENA's restaurants with an evening at the theater. It's quite unusual to find this calibre of entertainment within a luxury hotel, and I was interested to learn that Madonna performed here during the hotel's opening celebrations.

Tierra Santa Healing House – Spa & Wellness

Ancient Healing Traditions Meet Modern Wellness

Wellness is another important part of the FAENA experience, with Tierra Santa Healing House offering a distinctive approach that combines traditional healing rituals with contemporary treatments.

The spa features a beautiful collection of thermal and relaxation facilities, including a co-ed hydrotherapy area, sauna, waterfall showers and a cold chamber. Access to these wet spa facilities is included within the hotel's daily resort fee, which I think is a particularly welcome benefit.

Treatments range from Biologique Recherche facials to holistic massages incorporating aromatherapy, while the couples' suite offers an extended bathing ritual experience. There's also an on-site IV drip lounge and Salon Rosetti for hair and nail treatments.

Daily yoga and meditation sessions take place at 8am, complemented by a spacious yoga studio and a well-equipped gym overlooking the pool and beach. During my inspection, I also learned that Pilates reformer facilities are being introduced.

As someone with a particular interest in wellness and longevity, I was pleased to see how much emphasis FAENA places on this side of the guest experience, rather than treating the spa as simply another hotel facility.

Beach & Pool at FAENA Miami Beach

Miami Beach Luxury with Thoughtful Personal Service

Of course, one of the biggest attractions of FAENA Miami Beach is its spectacular oceanfront setting, with approximately 100,000 square feet of white sandy beach and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool surrounded by tropical landscaping.

What particularly impressed me was the attention to service on the beach. Guests are welcomed with a refreshing ice-water foot-washing ritual and a short massage, a lovely touch that immediately sets the tone for a relaxing day. The team also creates decorative sand art, while beach toys are available for younger guests.

Aerial view of FAENA Miami Beach's swimming pool, tropical gardens, red-and-white parasols and sandy Atlantic beachfront.

I was told that the hotel has sufficient beach chairs for all its guests, avoiding the frustrating early-morning competition for loungers that can sometimes be a feature of resort stays. Beach chairs are included within the daily resort fee, while daybeds can be reserved separately for an additional cost.

Around the swimming pool, there are just four private cabanas, available to reserve through the concierge, with a beverage package included. Together with the nearby Tree of Life Sunbar and the veranda at Los Fuegos, it's a wonderfully appealing setting for enjoying Miami's sunshine without ever needing to leave the hotel.

Design & History

From Miami Beach's Golden Age to a World of Art & Theatre

What I particularly appreciate about FAENA Miami Beach is that its design goes far beyond simply creating a beautiful luxury hotel. Every space feels carefully considered, with art, architecture and theatricality brought together to create an experience that is unmistakably FAENA.

Rather than simply restoring a historic Miami Beach property, Alan Faena has reimagined the building with a bold creative identity. Rich reds, gold accents, intricate patterns and luxurious materials sit alongside contemporary artworks, creating interiors that celebrate glamour and individuality rather than the understated minimalism found in so many modern luxury hotels.

There's also a strong connection to the brand's Argentinian roots, with South American artistic influences woven throughout the property. I particularly like how the design extends beyond the public spaces into the restaurants, bars and guest accommodation, giving the hotel a remarkably consistent sense of character.

For me, what makes the design so successful is that it feels immersive without being predictable. FAENA isn't trying to appeal to everyone, and I think that's part of its strength. It's confident, colourful and occasionally extravagant, creating a hotel that feels as much like a cultural experience as somewhere to stay.

Things to Do Near FAENA Miami Beach

From South Beach to the Design District

One of the advantages of staying at FAENA Miami Beach is having so much of Miami within easy reach. Although there's plenty to keep you entertained within the FAENA District itself, I would certainly recommend exploring some of the city's other neighbourhoods.

South Beach, approximately 10 minutes away by car, is famous for its colourful Art Deco architecture, Ocean Drive and lively restaurant scene. It's well worth exploring on foot, particularly around the historic Art Deco District.

For shopping, art and architecture, the Miami Design District is one of my favourite areas to recommend. Around 15–20 minutes from the hotel, it's home to an impressive collection of luxury boutiques, contemporary galleries, public artworks and excellent restaurants.

Wynwood is another interesting neighbourhood, particularly for its colourful street art, independent galleries and creative atmosphere. The famous Wynwood Walls are a highlight, although simply wandering around the surrounding streets is part of the experience.

And for something completely different, Little Havana offers a glimpse into Miami's Cuban heritage, with traditional cafés, cigar shops, live music and the lively atmosphere of Calle Ocho.

Getting around Miami is straightforward using Uber, so there's really no need to hire a car for most city sightseeing. I particularly like the idea of combining a few hours exploring the city with an afternoon back at FAENA enjoying the beach, pool or spa.

My Verdict of FAENA Miami Beach

More Than a Luxury Hotel – A Destination in Its Own Right

I have to say, FAENA Miami Beach was one of the highlights of my time in Miami. Having been aware of the brand since visiting Buenos Aires several years ago, I was genuinely impressed by what Alan Faena has created here.

What makes FAENA so special is that it doesn't feel like just another five-star beachfront hotel. The extraordinary art and design, impressive dining collection, intimate theater, extensive wellness facilities and beautiful beachfront setting all come together to create something genuinely distinctive.

I particularly loved the theatrical interiors, the arrival experience without a conventional reception desk, and the attention to detail throughout the property. The spacious oceanfront suites were another highlight, and I can certainly see why the hotel attracts such a loyal following of returning guests.

Although this Trip Report is based on an extensive hotel inspection rather than an overnight stay, I came away feeling that FAENA Miami Beach is somewhere I would genuinely love to return to as a guest.

And, perhaps more importantly from my perspective as a luxury travel advisor, it's a property I would be very confident recommending to the right clients.

FAENA Miami Beach is not simply somewhere to stay in Miami. It's somewhere to experience Miami in a completely different way.

Who Is FAENA Miami Beach Best For?

FAENA Miami Beach is particularly well suited to couples looking for a glamorous beachfront escape, travellers with an appreciation for art, architecture and design, and those who enjoy exceptional restaurants, cocktails and entertainment as part of their hotel experience.

It's also an excellent choice for special celebrations and milestone occasions, with extraordinary suites, private dining spaces and the FAENA Theater providing some genuinely memorable possibilities.

Families are well catered for too, with spacious Junior Suites, connecting accommodation and multi-bedroom options, alongside a beautiful beach and swimming pool.

For wellness enthusiasts, Tierra Santa Healing House adds another dimension, making it possible to combine a Miami beach holiday with spa treatments, yoga and holistic wellbeing.

Who might it not suit? Those who prefer understated, minimalist luxury or a particularly quiet, secluded resort. FAENA is unapologetically bold, theatrical and glamorous, and that's precisely what makes it so distinctive. However, as the team explained during my inspection, the hotel is deliberately divided into two distinct experiences: a quieter, more residential side centred around the guest rooms and suites, and a livelier side encompassing the restaurants, bars, theatre and nightlife, allowing guests to enjoy the excitement without necessarily being immersed in it throughout their stay.
