art’otel London Battersea Power Station Review: Stylish Luxury Beside London’s Iconic Landmark

I always love visiting new places, even if it is such a familiar location as London - especially tying in a new hotel with a new destination, and even better if there is an activity involving a train, funicular, cable car or a lift. I wanted to check out The Chimney Lift at Battersea Power Station, so we went a few months ago when it was called Lift 109 (because it rises to 109 metres high in one of the original power station chimneys) but has since been rebranded to The Chimney Lift. That trip, we just went for the day, and checked out some of the shops, restaurants and bars (inside and outside) at the newly renovated power station site. Seeing the adjacent building rooftop pool from the top of the lift, I later checked out what this was and found out it was the art’otel, a five star hotel newly opened in 2022 / 2023.

Contemporary art, rooftop views and modern luxury beside Battersea Power Station

Albeit just a one-night stay to tie in with London meetings, this seemed the perfect opportunity to try it out, and when I was there on the roof and surveying the surrounding areas, I then realised that it could be the perfect location for a future Chelsea Flower Show visit (which I love to do) and actually the show was on whilst I was there. It would just be a very easy 20 minute walk along the river front, to then cross the Chelsea Bridge right at the show ground. Going back to Battersea afterwards, to such a good hotel, and so many dining, shopping, and other activities based right on the doorstep could all lead towards a great stay.

Hotel Accommodation: art’otel London Battersea Power Station

Contemporary art-inspired rooms and suites overlooking one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

I really enjoyed my stay here - it’s an eclectic style, but very comfortable accommodations (and a good choice of different options, as below) with great facilities.

Room and Suite Types

There are basically six options here, ranging from the entry level Art Room (also a Skyline View and Plus options - either higher up for better views, or the ability to accommodate a third [single] bed), before you move into the Art Studio (which I had) which is much bigger and has the extra of a sofa as well as the desk area. In total, there are 164 rooms and suites of which 13 are the Art Studios - rooms are across floors one through 14.

Moving into the suite categories there is the Junior Suite which has the separate living space, which has a sofa bed for a third adult or child (only three of them available) and then the one and only Masterpiece Suite on the 14th floor, which can be connected to another room to make into a two-bedroom suite. This also has the option of a private elevator access.

Facilities & Service at art’otel London Battersea Power Station

Rooftop wellness, contemporary dining and design-led service beside Battersea Power Station.

I was really impressed by the on site facilities, like the choice of restaurants and bars, as well as the fitness and wellness options too.

Here’s a closer look at the hotel’s standout facilities and services, along with my personal take on each.

My (Art Studio) Room 1302

I wasn’t superstitious about being on the 13th floor, and it afforded me great London skyline views and was overlooking Battsea Dogs Home below, as well as looking out further across Battersea Park from the floor to ceiling windows.

It was spacious, and colorful, but also had everything I needed like the huge king bed, lots of storage space, a desk/work area, sofa, large TV as well as having both a tea/coffee station and a separate mini-bar (also good to have a mini-fridge section for own use items).

Levels of Comfort

Supremely clean, spacious, with a really comfortable bed and it felt overall much newer than having opened back at the end of 2022.

Bathroom

The internal bathroom was decent sized, with a great walk in shower , separate (single) sink and WC. There were hooks for towels and a good shelf for storage, with toiletries/bathroom amenities provided by KEVIN.MURPHY.

The overall finish felt modern and functional, while still maintaining the playful contemporary design style found throughout the rest of the hotel.

Breakfast

Rather than having a full breakfast in Tozi Restaurant, which is an option, I just decided (for speed) to have a coffee and a pastry in Tozi Counter, a street-facing Deli bar / coffee shop open throughout the day. This was great, reasonably priced, and perfectly located to watch the world go by.

It also worked particularly well for an early start in London, offering a much more relaxed alternative to a longer formal breakfast before heading out for the day.

Restaurants & Bars at art’otel London Battersea Power Station

From skyline cocktails to Portuguese-inspired dining, the hotel offers far more food and drink choice than I initially expected.

Initially I had thought that some of the restaurants featured on the hotel website might actually have been located within the Battersea Power Station (and there is a wealth of options there too, inside and outside surrounding the hotel) but no, all options below are part of the art’otel itself.

Stylish pastel-toned Perola lounge at art’otel Battersea Power Station with floor-to-ceiling windows, modern seating and elevated views across London.

JOIA Restaurant

This is the premier dining option on the 14th floor, only open for dinner during the week and then for lunch too at weekends. I didn’t have time for a meal here, but I did see it as part of a during during the day (and there is also a bar here too for a pre-dinner cocktail), and then again in the evening when I went back for a drink in the adjacent (and lower level) Perola Cocktail Bar. Both have stunning skyline views and of the power station itself - magical both day and night.

Perola Cocktail Bar

I came here for an after dinner drink, and this is also the venue used for some wellness activities - there is a stage in the centre of the bar, with double height floor to ceiling windows with the perfect view of the power station chimneys. At night, if there is no live music, the stage is also set with small tables, to give just that amazing backdrop, especially at night when the chimneys are illuminated.

Tozi Pizzeria & Cicchetti Bar

Such a great option, and amazing Italian food. I had a pre-dinner cocktail at the bar within the restaurant as my (window) table was being readied, and then it was hard to choose which menu options to go for - so much choice as a vegetarian. I kept it simple with delicious arancini to stat with, followed by a made-to-order pizza. Great service and excellent food.

Tozi Counter

Great for a coffee or snack throughout the day, and often private events held here in the evening. If you don’t want a full breakfast, there was a great drink and pastry option for just £5.

JOIA Rooftop

On the top, 16th floor, is both the outside pool and jacuzzi, and on the lower level an outside bar. I didn’t have a chance for anything here, but it would be great for evening drinks and the view of the sunset over the London skyline.

Fitness, Spa & Wellness

Rooftop wellness, skyline views and contemporary leisure facilities in the heart of Battersea.

There was such a good choice of treatments, all outsourced through Mamma Wellbeing and individual therapists across three broad headings - Beauty, Training, Aqua and Yoga. Skyline Yoga, Facial Aesthetics, Lymphatic Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, Personal Training, Hypnotherapy, Sports Massage and Advanced Aesthetics.

I had booked in advance an hour’s sports massage, which was excellent - I wish it had been a two hour treatment!

Facilities include:

  • Rooftop infinity swimming pool

  • Steam room

  • Sauna

  • Modern fitness centre / gym

  • Wellness treatment rooms

  • Rooftop terrace with skyline views

  • Poolside relaxation areas

  • Yoga and wellness sessions (selected dates)

Design, Architecture & History at art’otel London Battersea Power Station

Contemporary art, bold interiors and one of London’s most iconic regenerated landmarks.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the art’otel concept is that every property across the brand is centred around a different signature artist or designer, helping each hotel develop its own completely individual identity rather than feeling like part of a traditional chain.

At art’otel London Battersea Power Station, the interiors were designed by acclaimed Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon, whose playful contemporary style can be seen throughout the hotel - from the guestrooms and corridors to the public spaces and rooftop areas.

The reception and lounge spaces in particular feel more like a private contemporary gallery than a conventional hotel lobby, housing pieces from Hayon’s own personal art collection alongside bespoke furniture, sculptures and commissioned works created specifically for the property.

The building itself forms part of the enormous regeneration surrounding Battersea Power Station, one of London’s most recognisable industrial landmarks. Originally completed in stages between the 1930s and 1950s, the restored power station has now become one of the capital’s most ambitious mixed-use developments, combining luxury residences, restaurants, shopping and hospitality around the famous Grade II listed structure and its iconic chimneys.

What I particularly liked about art’otel Battersea was that despite the hotel’s contemporary feel, it still manages to reference the creativity and industrial heritage of the wider Battersea development rather than feeling disconnected from it.

Pro Tip: Choosing Your Room

Rooms facing Battersea Power Station and the London skyline offer the most distinctive views, while higher floors and rooftop-facing categories feel noticeably quieter and more premium during a stay.

What about the Battersea Power Station location?

One of London’s most transformed neighbourhoods, with excellent transport connections, riverside walks and easy access across the capital.

One of the things I actually liked most about staying at art’otel Battersea Power Station was how much easier the area now feels to reach compared to a few years ago, largely thanks to the Northern Line extension opening directly beside the Power Station development.

Coming from London City Airport, the journey was surprisingly straightforward — taking the DLR before changing onto the Northern Line at Kennington, which then takes you directly into Battersea Power Station station itself just moments from the hotel.

The location also works particularly well for Heathrow connections. Heading back into central London, it was very easy taking the Northern Line directly to Tottenham Court Road, where you can connect straight onto the Elizabeth Line with direct services to all Heathrow terminals.

Beyond transport, Battersea itself has become a genuinely enjoyable part of London to spend time around rather than simply somewhere to sleep. The riverside setting works particularly well for walking, whether heading along the Thames Path towards Chelsea and Westminster, exploring Battersea Park, or simply spending time around the restaurants, cafés and open public spaces surrounding the restored Power Station development itself.

What I also liked was that despite feeling modern and newly developed, the area still feels noticeably calmer and less hectic than many central London hotel locations, while remaining extremely well connected to the rest of the city.

Things to Do Nearby in Battersea

From rooftop views and riverside walks to shopping, dining and art, Battersea has become one of London’s most exciting regenerated neighbourhoods.

  • Visiting The Chimney Lift (formerly Lift 109) for panoramic London skyline views

  • Exploring the restored Battersea Power Station itself

  • Shopping inside the Power Station development

  • Riverside walks along the Thames Path

  • Battersea Park and the Peace Pagoda

  • Rooftop bars and restaurants nearby

  • Watching sunset from the Power Station riverside terraces

  • Taking the Uber Boat / Thames Clippers into central London

  • The Northern Line extension giving easy access to Soho, the West End and City

  • Nearby Sloane Square and Chelsea

  • Seasonal events, outdoor screenings and pop-ups around Electric Boulevard

What makes staying at art’otel Battersea particularly appealing is that the hotel sits directly beside one of London’s most ambitious regeneration projects. Battersea Power Station itself has become a destination beyond simply shopping or dining, with a lively atmosphere that feels very different from more traditional luxury hotel neighbourhoods in central London.

The Chimney Lift experience remains one of the area’s highlights, taking visitors 109 metres above the Power Station for panoramic skyline views across London, while the surrounding Electric Boulevard development now houses restaurants, cafés, bars and retail spaces throughout the restored industrial complex.

The riverside location also works particularly well for walking, whether heading east along the Thames Path towards Chelsea and Westminster, or simply spending time around Battersea Park, which remains one of London’s best green spaces close to the city centre.

One of the biggest advantages of the location now is connectivity. With the Northern Line extension directly beside the hotel, areas such as Soho, the West End and the City are all surprisingly quick to reach despite Battersea previously feeling relatively disconnected from central London.

Highlights of my stay

There were quite a few standout moments during my stay at art’otel London Battersea Power Station, but here are some of the highlights which I think best summarise the overall experience.

  • Location - easy to get to, and that iconic power station and chimneys view all around.

  • Hotel accommodation - great options and excellent rooms/suites.

  • Dining - good having multiple options within the hotel, as well as the myriad of options surrounding.

  • Shopping and other services - everything is on your doorstep, including a cinema, and a great barber’s shop literally right next to the hotel, which I used.

  • Great lifts - loved the tech that you just selected the floor you wanted, then scanned the room card for security - quick and efficient, and clever use of double-sided lift doors for different parts of the hotel.

  • Room cleanliness and presentation - such a nice welcome too with fruit and a mini macaron ‘cake’.

  • Bathrobes - made a change having them dark grey rather than the standard white. Super fluffy and excellently sized. Nice slippers too in grey, but after the article I read about hotel slipper waste, I can’t use them any more.

  • Great Wi-Fi throughout, and a good desk area within the Art Studio.

  • Having that iconic rooftop pool was amazing, and such a great wellness space.

  • Excellent therapist and treatment - sports massage, relaxing yet deep and therapeutic.

Areas for improvement:

While I always prefer to focus on the highlights of any stay, there are occasionally small moments that could have made the overall experience feel even smoother.

  • I could definitely have stayed longer, and would seriously consider this as a location for Chelsea Flower Show

  • It’s not really a criticism, but I never fully worked out the “WonderPass” concept during my stay. From some of the marketing, I initially assumed it was a dedicated interactive hotel app - perhaps for things like room controls, hotel services or digital guest access - particularly as the hotel positions itself as very modern and tech-forward. However, despite being fairly tech savvy, I couldn’t really find a clear standalone app experience. In practice, it seemed more like a branded digital information hub within the hotel’s website, providing details on hotel facilities, local recommendations and guest information rather than a fully integrated smart-room platform. It certainly wasn’t a major issue during the stay, but I do think the branding perhaps creates slightly different expectations initially compared to what the experience actually delivers.

Would I Stay Here Again?

100% yes - I was so impressed with my stay and definitely would return, or have wanted to stay longer.

My final thoughts on art’otel London Battersea Power Station

I wasn’t too sure what to expect, other than I thought I would enjoy the Battersea Location and it was centrally located for what I wanted to do when in London. It actually far exceeded expectations, and is a hotel that I would recommend very, very highly. As an alternative to some other options in central London, this was a great combination of facilities, adjacency to such an iconic building, but also great being on the river and being so near to Chelsea etc.
