HOTEL REVIEW BY THE PRIVATE TRAVELLER

Overview

Having booked to go to Palm Springs in February for Modernism Week, we were looking for somewhere to visit around California/Nevada before flying home from LAX airport in Los Angeles. We’ve been to California quite a bit in the past, and also visited Las Vegas before, but a few days in Las Vegas at the end of the trip seemed like a good idea especially when tying in a couple of shows (Cher and Michael Jackon One/Cirque du Soleil). 

It was an easy, scenic drive from our hotel in Palm Springs (La Serena Villas - you can read the review here) and we arrived on the outskirts of Las Vegas at dusk - a perfect time for the skyline to appear on the horizon. We were so pleased with our choice of Hotel Four Seasons Las Vegas - perfect location, stunning accommodation, service and facilities and best of all an absolute oasis in an otherwise smoky city with gambling everywhere in other hotels.

Would I stay here again?   To be honest, going back to Las Vegas wasn’t really in our minds; but to go back for another show (like the Lady Gaga Enigma show) definitely would be and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at the Four Seasons.

Location

The Four Seasons at Las Vegas is situated on the uppermost floors of one of the buildings at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. This complex also includes The Delano Hotel, shopping malls, restaurants and bars; and the Michael Jackson One (Cirque du Soleil) at the on-site theater. There are the inevitable casino complexes too, albeit the Four Seasons in a non-gaming oasis, one of the key reasons we chose this, as well as it being rated number 2 on TripAdvisor (out of 273 hotels and the top five star hotel).

It’s located at the upper end of the Vegas strip, near the infamous ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign. Despite what may seem like a slightly out of the way location, it meant it was easy to drive to and from (there was ample parking on site as well as valet parking for Four Seasons guests). It was also easily connected by monorail to both the Luxor and Excalibur hotels, then within an easy elevated walk to the MGM Park Theater (at the MGM Grand complex) where we were lucky enough to see Cher.

Accommodation

There was a choice of rooms from Superior, Deluxe and Stadium-View to the Strip-View rooms and studios. We had booked a Strip-View room with a potential upgrade from Grand Luxury to a higher category; but it was a busy weekend with the Tyson Fury v Deontay Wilder fight so no upgrade given. This was our first ever stay with Grand Luxury, despite high expectations I must say this (the welcome experience, not the Four Seasons hotel itself)  failed to impress compared to what we normally get through Leading Hotels of the World. There were various suites (9 different categories by my reckoning) ranging from the FS Executive Suite at 810 sq. ft. (75 m2) to the 2,225 sq. ft. (207 m2) Presidential Strip-View Suite.

We had a Strip-View - this was 500 sq. ft. (46 m2) with an incredibly comfortable king-size bed (amazingly soft pillows and beautiful bedding linens). There was a large en-suite bathroom (separate shower cubicle and WC off the main bathroom) - one of the key highlights was the L’Occitane (Amande) toiletries; the only disappointment was only having one sink in a bathroom size that could easily have accommodated two. There was ample space, excellent Wi-Fi, a large writing desk and chair as well as occasional seating and just the most incredible view over the strip, day and night.

Food & Drink

We had breakfast in the Veranda restaurant a couple of mornings (and room service on one day where we had an early start to drive to the Hoover Dam. In the Verandah this was a la carte only during the week (open 6:30AM - 11AM), but on Saturday and Sunday there was a copious breakfast buffet served 8:00AM - 1PM; with the a la carte option also served from 7AM weekends too. Service was amazing as was the food choice (both a la carte and buffet) - it was expensive, but we had a breakfast credit included as part of our package which definitely softened the blow!

The hotel also hosted the Charlie Palmer Steak restaurant and various bars throughout, but other than a room service meal one evening before a show we didn’t eat anything other than breakfast in the hotel. So easy to walk nearby to other restaurants as part of the overall Mandalay Bay Complex (there was an excellent one called the Noodle Shop serving authentic Cantonese and Mandarin dishes - great food, service and decent prices).

Facilities & Service

Although very much part of the overall Mandalay Bay Resort complex, the Four Seasons Hotel is distinct with its own entrance and lobby area, restaurants and bars, outdoor pool (seasonal, which wasn’t yet open when we were there in February), Spa / Nail Bar, Fitness Centre and on-site shop. You also had access to the other pools and facilities of the Mandalay Bay.

I didn’t use the Fitness room when there, but this is open daily (24 hour access with room key). There was a decent selection of fitness machines and weights, with towels/water provided and luxurious locker room facilities next door with a relaxation area, showers and sauna.

I booked a deep tissue / Muscle Melt massage while there with a male therapist - this was amazing, Robert was such a good therapist and the massage was one of the best I’ve had in any hotel. Again, like meals, it wasn’t cheap but was definitely worth it and the hotel (through Grand Luxury) did offer a Spa credit.

ThePrivateTraveller’s top tips (any areas for improvement?):

  • Very hard to find any negatives here, we absolutely loved our stay and will definitely go back.

  • We put out the hanging card on the door each night to get a complimentary newspaper, but never got one.
