BUFF Medical Resort Germany Review: My Medical Wellness Experience
Visiting BUFF Medical Resort on Lake Constance had been on my wellness radar since it opened in April 2025. I love researching - and, whenever possible, experiencing - new wellness resorts first-hand, both for my own personal wellness journey and to ensure I’m as informed as possible when advising and booking clients.
BUFF particularly interested me because of its combination of medical expertise, preventative health and wellness, all within the setting of a luxury resort on the shores of Lake Constance. In May 2026, I finally had the opportunity to experience it for myself.
As well as writing this Wellness Journey report, I’ll also be posting a more detailed hotel review - as you might well want to visit BUFF simply as a hotel guest - along with a separate, in-depth spa review.
Alongside all of the medical and therapeutic treatments on offer, including those that form part of the inclusive treatment programmes, there was also a whole array of more traditional spa treatments available. There is definitely enough to cover each aspect of BUFF in its own right.

Why I Chose BUFF Medical
As such a new player in the wellness space, I was intrigued to experience BUFF and its facilities first-hand. Every wellness resort approaches things a little differently, often introducing new technologies, treatments and philosophies, as well as placing greater emphasis on particular areas of health and longevity.
For me, that’s a big part of the appeal of visiting these resorts - discovering different approaches to nutrition and digestion, medical assessment and diagnostics, therapies, fitness, recovery and overall wellbeing, and seeing how they all come together as part of a personalised programme.
It’s also about the entire guest journey. I’m always interested in what happens before arrival, including any questionnaires, assessments or preparation, through to the welcome and initial consultations once at the resort. And, of course, there’s the hotel side of the experience too - the accommodation, service, food, facilities and overall environment are all important when you’re spending several days focused on your health and wellbeing.
What Is BUFF Medical?
BUFF Medical Resort is a luxury medical wellness and longevity retreat on the shores of Lake Constance in southern Germany. Rather than being a traditional spa or wellness hotel, the concept combines the comforts and service of a high-end resort with medical diagnostics, preventative healthcare and personalised wellness programmes.
Behind the resort is Swiss hotelier and entrepreneur Hans-Jürg Buff, whose family has a long history in hospitality, particularly in St. Moritz. His vision was to bring together the world of luxury hospitality with leading doctors, medical diagnostics, nutrition and the latest health technologies, all under one roof. It remains very much a family venture, with his eldest son, Jean Jacques Buff, also involved in the management of the resort.
The philosophy is about understanding what is happening within your body today, while looking at what can be done to improve your health and wellbeing for the future. Medical assessments and diagnostics are combined with nutrition, movement, fitness, therapies and recovery, with programmes tailored to the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
That medical element is what really differentiates BUFF from a more traditional wellness retreat. You can still enjoy the relaxing surroundings, spa facilities and hotel experience, but there is a much greater focus on measurable health, prevention and longevity - using medical expertise and diagnostics to help inform the treatments and recommendations you receive during your stay.
Location & First Impressions
I guess I had expected BUFF to be in a remote area, but I now realise that was a misconception that all wellness retreats had to be remote. Getting there was easy - I flew direct from Edinburgh to Zurich with Edelweiss Air (SWISS usually flies the same route at a different time each day) and then took the train from the airport to Konstanz station. I was able to get a direct train on the return, which was so easy, but to match the day and timing of my arrival flight, I had to change at Winterthur.
The train journey only took about an hour, and I was met at the station by the resort for the drive of just a few minutes to BUFF. Being so close to Konstanz (or Constance), it’s actually an easy walk into town - just not one I’d necessarily do with luggage, particularly when arriving for the first time and not knowing exactly where I was going.
Driving into the resort, I could immediately see how impressive it was, particularly given its location in such a residential area. Once I was in my 56 m² Junior Suite, with its south-facing balcony looking across the grounds towards Lake Constance, it felt much more like the peaceful wellness retreat I had imagined.
What also differentiates BUFF at the moment is that it operates as both a wellness hotel and a health/medical resort. The weekend I visited, there seemed to be quite a few large events happening around the town, so the split then was probably more hotel-focused and less on the wellness side. It meant that all of the wellness facilities were incredibly quiet. The main accommodation categories for one or two guests range from 42 m² Deluxe Double Rooms to 56 m² Junior Suites and 84 m² Suites, so even at higher occupancy I don’t think you’re ever going to find it feeling particularly crowded.
There is such an array of facilities, both inside and out, and being right on the lake itself is a real advantage. A secure gate in front of the property opens directly onto the lake promenade, and while I was there I enjoyed walks along the lakeside and into town. There’s also the option to bathe or swim in the lake itself, although I didn’t do that during my stay.
What was also interesting to me was discovering that Lake Constance actually spans three countries - Germany, Switzerland and Austria. It made me appreciate just how simple it was to fly into one country and then take the train into another so seamlessly.
Treatments & My Experience
Before Arrival & My Wellness Programme
My trip was a short familiarisation stay, and I was able to experience the resort both as a therapy guest and as a hotel guest. The most obvious identifier of which guest I was at different times was actually at mealtimes, where my options differed depending on which side of the experience I was following.
Had I selected one of BUFF’s formal medical programmes, the process would have started before simply arriving at the resort. BUFF first looks at what you want to achieve, how much time you have available and your individual health needs, before recommending the most appropriate programme. The duration, intensity and medical focus can then be tailored to you rather than simply choosing a standard package. Once at the resort, the medical side begins with a detailed consultation and initial assessment, with the findings used to shape the diagnostics, treatments and therapies that follow. In other words, two guests selecting BUFF for very different reasons could end up having quite different stays.
Medical Consultation & Diagnostics
BUFF Medical Resort is much more than a hotel with a medical spa attached. Its medically supervised programmes combine diagnostics, preventive medicine, nutrition, physical performance and complementary therapies, with stays tailored according to both your health goals and the amount of time you have available. Current programmes range from shorter stays focused on areas such as relaxation, sports performance and cardiovascular health through to more comprehensive 10–21-night programmes. There are also dedicated options centred around F.X. Mayr fasting, vitality and apheresis (therapeutic blood purification).
Rather than simply selecting treatments from a spa menu, the principle is that your programme begins with medical consultation and assessment, after which different therapies can be brought together according to your individual needs. The scope is impressive. BUFF divides its treatments across areas including diagnostics and analysis, heart and performance, metabolism and gut health, muscle and movement, complementary medicine and recovery, apheresis and regeneration, and even simulated altitude therapy designed to support cellular regeneration. Depending on the programme, diagnostics and treatments can include laboratory testing, ECG and heart-rate variability measurement, continuous glucose monitoring, spiroergometry, 3D body diagnostics, gait analysis, nutritional counselling and respiratory therapy alongside more traditional treatments such as osteopathy, Ayurveda and massage.
There is a particularly strong emphasis on gut and metabolic health. BUFF is a certified F.X. Mayr Prevent Centre, with programmes incorporating therapeutic fasting or individually tailored nutrition, while its more advanced medical capabilities include high-resolution cardiac and brain imaging. This combination of serious medical diagnostics with nutrition, movement, recovery and spa therapies is really what distinguishes the concept from a conventional wellness retreat.
Treatments & Therapies
With only a short stay, I obviously experienced just a fraction of the treatments and therapies available at BUFF Medical Resort, but my own programme was remarkably varied. Following my initial medical consultation, my schedule included Buteyko breathing techniques, personal training and high-intensity training, osteopathy, an Ayurvedic Padabhyanga foot treatment and colon hydrotherapy. It gave me a real taste of the different strands of the BUFF approach – combining medical assessment with movement and performance, complementary therapies, gut health and recovery.
One of the absolute highlights for me was the gait analysis. This was much more sophisticated than I had expected, using 3D technology, slow-motion cameras and AI-powered analysis to examine the way I stood, walked and moved. What made it particularly impressive was that the assessment didn't simply end with a report: the results were used to create completely personalised orthopaedic insoles, 3D-printed specifically for me. I found the whole process amazing, and it was probably the best example during my stay of BUFF combining detailed diagnostics and technology with something practical that I could take home and continue benefiting from afterwards.
There was also a good balance between treatments that felt overtly medical and those that were closer to a traditional wellness experience. My Padabhyanga Ayurvedic foot treatment was a complete contrast to the gait analysis and fitness sessions, while osteopathy provided another more hands-on approach to movement and physical wellbeing. Colon hydrotherapy was perhaps the most unusual treatment on my schedule and reflected the resort's strong emphasis on digestive and gut health. Taken together, the variety made the programme feel genuinely individual rather than like a predetermined series of spa treatments.
Nutrition, Food & Dining
The nutritional approach, meals, dietary advice and how this fitted into the medical programme.Being that slightly unusual ‘mixed’ guest, I had more freedom with food than I would have had if I had been staying solely as a therapy guest. I could try the Longevity Breakfast, as well as choosing between the Longevity Classic Menu and the changing menu of the day for dinner. There was certainly nothing that felt like ‘diet food’. The Classic Menu included the BUFF Medical Superfood Salad with leafy greens, buckwheat, avocado and blueberries, alongside main courses such as Lake Constance pike-perch with sweet potato purée and green asparagus, or a vegetarian asparagus risotto with pine nuts, goat’s cheese ricotta and wild herbs. There were even desserts, including a kaffir lime coconut cream with rhubarb, raspberry and pistachio. The daily Longevity Menu was shorter, with choices including parsley-root cream soup, goat-curd mousse, Lake Constance fish, an organic egg frittata and a root-vegetable cassoulet.
Had I been staying as a full-time therapy guest, things would have been rather different. BUFF is a certified F.X. Mayr Prevent Centre, and my diet would have been determined as part of my medical assessment and the programme designed for me. Depending on the individual, this can range from therapeutic fasting to a specially adapted, easily digestible diet – so it isn't simply a case of every medical guest being put on the same restrictive menu.
The F.X. Mayr approach is also very much about how you eat, rather than just what you eat. Its principles include giving the digestive system time to rest, supporting gut health and retraining the way you eat. One of the things I found particularly interesting was the emphasis on slowing everything down: eating mindfully, stopping when you are full and chewing each mouthful around 30 to 40 times. It sounds incredibly simple, but try actually doing it! The overall philosophy is less about counting calories and more about understanding your digestion and developing better eating habits that you can hopefully continue once you get home.
Fitness, Spa & Wellness Facilities
The fitness and wellness facilities at BUFF were every bit as impressive as the medical side. On the ground floor, the large indoor pool flows seamlessly into a supersized outdoor pool, so you can swim straight from inside to out, with the outdoor section extending into the gardens overlooking Lake Constance. Next to the main pool was another indoor bathing area, almost like a large jacuzzi, with a salt wall creating a brine-rich environment. It was a lovely space and somewhere I could easily have spent much longer.
Downstairs was the extensive thermal and relaxation area, with everything from saunas and a steam room to relaxation spaces, Kneipp baths and an ice bath for anyone wanting the full hot-and-cold experience. There was plenty of space simply to switch off too, and I liked that the spa facilities were substantial enough to be a destination in their own right rather than feeling like an add-on to the medical resort.
The gym was excellent, with a really impressive range of brand-new Technogym equipment, and fitness formed an important part of the overall BUFF concept. There is also a dedicated studio for yoga, Pilates and Qigong, alongside meditation and breathwork, while my own programme included both personal training and high-intensity training. There is even simulated altitude training available, another example of how far beyond a conventional hotel gym the facilities go.
Despite all the medical and fitness technology, there is still very much a traditional spa element too. Massages and body treatments are available, including Ayurveda delivered by BUFF’s in-house Indian Ayurveda specialists, while facials and skincare use TEAM DR JOSEPH organic skincare from South Tyrol. I only had time to experience part of what was available during this stay, so I’ll also be publishing a separate, more detailed spa review, where I’ll cover the spa and thermal facilities, treatments and overall experience in much greater depth.
My Results & What Stood Out
There were a few things that particularly stood out from my stay. The gait analysis was fascinating, and probably one of the biggest surprises was just how quickly I noticed a difference from the personalised 3D-printed insoles. I could feel the benefit almost immediately, which made this one of the most tangible things I took away from the programme – quite literally!
I also really valued having the one-to-one consultation with the doctor, and the breathwork session was another highlight. This was largely new territory for me, particularly mouth taping, but it gave me a much greater awareness of how I was actually breathing and the wider effect that breathing can have on the body and our health. It was exactly the sort of thing I hoped to discover at BUFF: something relatively simple that I hadn't really considered before, but which I could continue thinking about and applying once I was back home.
Another standout was the Technogym assessment equipment, which automatically put me through a whole series of tests and measurements, producing a surprisingly detailed picture of my fitness and physical condition. I'm not entirely sure I wanted to know everything it told me, but it was incredibly impressive! More importantly, the results gave the team objective information that could then be used to tailor my training and recommendations.
What impressed me most overall was that I left with things I could actually use. It wasn't simply about having a few days of treatments and feeling better while I was there; between the insoles, breathing techniques, medical consultation and fitness assessments, there were practical recommendations and a much greater awareness of my own body that I could take home with me.
My Verdict: Is BUFF Medical Worth It?
I would recommend it, 100%. The resort was so easy to get to, with fantastic facilities, and I loved the location - whether visiting simply for a hotel stay or for a more dedicated medical and wellness programme. My only regret was that I wasn’t able to stay longer.
Everything was extremely well organised, and with such a wide range of therapies, medical tests and treatments, alongside the amazing fitness, spa and thermal facilities, this really was an excellent wellness destination. I also liked that you could make the experience as intensive or as relaxed as you wanted, while still enjoying everything you would expect from a luxury hotel.
BUFF Medical Q&A
Where is BUFF Medical Resort?
BUFF Medical Resort is in Konstanz in southern Germany, directly on Lake Constance and close to the Swiss border. Despite feeling very peaceful once inside the resort, it isn't isolated – you can actually walk along the lake into the centre of Konstanz. I travelled from Zurich Airport by train to Konstanz, which took around an hour, followed by a very short transfer to the resort.
What is the best airport for BUFF Medical Resort?
For international visitors, Zurich Airport is probably the easiest option. There are direct trains between Zurich Airport and Konstanz at certain times, with other services requiring a simple change. This made BUFF much easier to reach than I had expected from the UK.
Do you have to be on a medical programme to stay at BUFF?
No. One of the interesting things about BUFF is that it operates as both a luxury hotel and a medical wellness resort. You can therefore stay primarily for the hotel, spa and Lake Constance setting, or visit for a much more structured medical and wellness programme. My own stay was a mixture of the two, which allowed me to experience both sides of the resort.
What treatments does BUFF Medical Resort offer?
The range is extensive, covering medical diagnostics, cardiovascular health and performance, metabolism and gut health, movement, complementary medicine and recovery. Depending on your programme, this can include laboratory testing, ECG and heart-rate variability testing, continuous glucose monitoring, spiroergometry, 3D body diagnostics, gait analysis, nutritional counselling and respiratory therapy, alongside treatments such as osteopathy, Ayurveda and massage.
What was the best treatment I experienced at BUFF?
For me, it was the gait analysis and personalised 3D-printed insoles. The assessment used 3D technology, slow-motion cameras and AI-powered analysis to look at how I stood, walked and moved, before personalised orthopaedic insoles were created for me. Even better, I could feel the benefit from them almost immediately.
Does BUFF Medical follow the F.X. Mayr method?
Yes. BUFF is a certified F.X. Mayr Prevent Centre, and gut and metabolic health form an important part of its approach. Nutrition can be individually adapted following your medical assessment and can range from therapeutic fasting to specially adapted, easily digestible diets. The Mayr philosophy also places considerable emphasis on how you eat, including eating slowly and chewing food thoroughly.
Is the food at BUFF Medical restrictive?
Not necessarily. As I was experiencing BUFF as both a hotel and therapy guest, I had considerably more choice and could try the Longevity Breakfast, Longevity Classic Menu and changing daily menu. If you're undertaking a dedicated medical programme, however, your diet may be individually prescribed as part of your assessment and could therefore be much more structured.
Does BUFF Medical Resort have a good spa and gym?
Very much so. The indoor pool leads directly into a huge outdoor pool overlooking the grounds and Lake Constance, while downstairs you'll find the thermal area with saunas, steam room, Kneipp baths, relaxation areas and an ice bath. The gym was also excellent, with an impressive range of new Technogym equipment, alongside spaces for yoga, Pilates, Qigong, meditation and breathwork.
How long should you stay at BUFF Medical Resort?
This is one area where I would do things differently next time. My visit was a short familiarisation stay and, although I managed to experience a surprising amount, my biggest regret was not staying longer. BUFF offers everything from shorter targeted stays to much more comprehensive programmes lasting 10–21 nights, so the right length really depends on what you want to achieve.
Is BUFF Medical Resort worth it?
For me, absolutely. What impressed me most was the combination of serious medical expertise and diagnostics with excellent fitness, spa and hotel facilities. I also left with things I could actually use at home – from my personalised insoles to breathing techniques and a greater awareness of my own health and fitness.
Disclosure: My stay at BUFF Medical Resort was hosted by the resort. As always, everything I have written reflects my own experience and opinions. I only ever recommend experiences I genuinely believe in – hosted or otherwise. I would rather say nothing at all than write something I didn’t genuinely believe.
