Why I Love Inaugural Cruises: Norwegian Luna from Miami

The main reason for this trip is to take the inaugural journey of a new Norwegian Cruise Line Ship, the Norwegian Luna. Being relatively new to cruising, I seem to have very quickly appreciated a love of trying different cruise lines, and if at all possible, trying out either their preview or inaugural cruise launch trip.

My first trip with Cunard was on the QMII, which was clearly not a launch cruise, but I did then follow next with the preview cruise of Celebrity’s Xcel which I loved. You can read all about that experience here with Virtuoso.

A Miami Departure with the Perfect Pre- & Post-Cruise Escape

Searching for new ships I came across the Norwegian Luna, and in particular I like to focus on the high-end ship-within-a -ship experiences like The Retreat (on Celebrity), The Haven (for Norwegian) and the classic experience of the Queens Grills experience on Cunard. Coming up after Norwegian is the new Explora III ship in summer 2026.

Featured Hotels

  • Sofitel London Heathrow

    • Apolished and supremely convenient pre-flight stay directly connected to Terminal 5, ideal for beginning a long-haul journey rested and unhurried.

  • InterContinental Miami by IHG

    • A waterfront gateway hotel overlooking Biscayne Bay, perfectly positioned for a seamless pre- or post-cruise stay just moments from Port Miami.

  • Hotel Esencia

    • A discreet Riviera Maya retreat set between jungle and Caribbean sea, where barefoot glamour meets private-estate tranquillity.

With the main focus being the cruise, I do just have an overnight at the Sofitel in Heathrow beforehand, and not wanting to risk only arriving in port on the day of the cruise, I’m flying to Miami the day before and staying over at the InterContinental. Not somewhere I would normally choose for a Miami stay, but being so adjacent to the port, it seemed like the perfect overnight stop. It looks too like the hotel will have port views, and I loved when I was in Fort Lauderdale for the Celebrity Xcel launch to see it arrive in port on the day of the cruise launch.

I’ll be heading over to Hotel Esencia for the day while in Cozumel — a property I already know well from booking clients there over the Christmas period last year. It’s one I’ve been keen to experience first-hand, particularly given its reputation for understated luxury, exceptional service, and that exclusive, residential feel along this stretch of coastline.

Flight Recommendations

Where the voyage truly begins: long-haul luxury before the inaugural sailing.

I’ve flown a few times recently back and forth to Miami, but always with British Airways, so I thought I would take the chance this trip to try out American Airlines on the outbound, and British Airways again on the return. I think I may have made the schoolboy error though of thinking these Flagship First Suites were new, where in fact I’m expecting them to be quite old. American airlines can often have a different definition of First, and I’ve taken some AA flights in First which was definitely just a business class.

American Airlines Boeing 777 business class cabin on London Heathrow to Miami flight AA39

Searching online for Flagship First, what always comes up is the new Flagship Suites for American, an upgraded business class suite with a closing door. It appears that American Airlines, like many airlines, are removing First Class from their aircraft as they’re being refitted in favour of larger business class cabins with better suites.

That said, I’m still looking forward to the experience and plan to go down to London the night before and stay over at a favourite hotel, the Sofitel London Heathrow. This way, rather than just having luggage checked through and a coach transfer from T5 to T3, I will recheck luggage at Heathrow’s Terminal 3 and have the full AA First experience.

Norwegian Luna

Seven Nights in the Western Caribbean

As I’ve said before, I love new ships — and I love trying out new cruise lines — so when I spotted the brand-new Norwegian Luna and the opportunity to experience The Haven suites, I knew it was something I wanted to book.

It feels slightly serendipitous that I’ve progressed from a two-night cruise, to four nights, and now to a full seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary — incorporating two new countries for me: Belize and Honduras.

Main pool deck on Norwegian Luna with sun loungers, cabanas and modern outdoor design

We’ll be docking at Harvest Caye, Belize and Roatán in the Bay Islands of Honduras (both cruise ports I’ve been keen to experience). Harvest Caye is actually a purpose-built island destination developed by Norwegian Cruise Line — designed exclusively for their guests — with its own marina, beaches and resort-style facilities. It’s very much a curated cruise experience rather than a traditional town port.

Roatán, however, is different. While some cruise lines have developed specific terminals or beach clubs on the island, Roatán itself is a genuine Caribbean destination with independent towns, diving culture and reef access. Multiple cruise lines dock there, and it offers more scope to explore beyond the port area.

I also love sailing days — and there are two full sea days on this itinerary — which, when staying in The Haven, are often the highlight.

On the way back, we call into both Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. Having visited Mexico several times before, Costa Maya is further south along the Yucatán coast than where I’ve previously stayed (near Tulum), so that will feel new. I was in Cozumel for the first time only a few months ago. It wasn’t my favourite part of Mexico, if I’m honest — although the weather wasn’t on my side, and perhaps I’d feel differently with clearer skies.

That said, the Cozumel stop presents the perfect opportunity to take the ferry across to the Mexican mainland and visit Hotel Esencia — a property I’ve long admired. I had clients staying there over the holiday period and they absolutely loved it, so I’m very much looking forward to seeing it for myself.

What I want to learn about this inaugural cruise

A First Look at Norwegian Luna — Beyond the Brochure

Whenever I go on a new cruise — especially an inaugural sailing — I want to understand every detail, not just from a guest perspective, but from the point of view of recommending it properly to clients. For this inaugural voyage on the Norwegian Luna, I’ll be focusing on:

  • The check-in process and pre-departure arrangements – how smooth and premium the experience feels from arrival to boarding

  • Priority embarkation for suite guests – whether The Haven guests genuinely benefit from a fast-track, seamless start

  • The Haven – how exclusive does it really feel? – does it truly operate as a “ship-within-a-ship”

  • The Haven accommodation – suite design, space, privacy, and overall finish

  • Butler and concierge service – how proactive, personalised, and visible the service is throughout the sailing

  • The Haven restaurant (Luminae equivalent comparison) – quality, consistency, and whether it feels elevated vs main dining

  • Private pool deck & lounge areas – atmosphere, crowding levels, and whether it remains a calm retreat

  • Overall crowd flow across the ship – does a brand-new ship design improve movement and reduce bottlenecks?

  • Dining across the ship – speciality vs included venues, ease of booking, and overall quality

  • Bar and lounge concepts – standout venues, atmosphere, and uniqueness (especially any hidden/speakeasy-style spaces)

  • Entertainment and shows – production quality and ease of access (including priority seating for Haven guests)

  • Spa and wellness offering – thermal suite, treatments, and whether it competes with leading ships

  • Technology onboard – WiFi quality, app usability, and digital integration

  • Cabin design outside The Haven – how standard cabins compare in space and finish

  • Service levels ship-wide – consistency across venues, not just in premium areas

  • Public spaces and design flow – how the ship feels aesthetically and practically

  • Sea day experience – whether the ship feels busy or well-balanced when at full capacity

  • Port day logistics – disembarkation ease and priority handling for Haven guests

  • Overall value proposition – how this compares to competitors like Celebrity’s Retreat or MSC Yacht Club

This is ultimately about understanding where Norwegian Cruise Line positions the Luna — and whether The Haven truly delivers a luxury experience that I’d confidently recommend to my clients.

Where to Stay in Mexico

Hotel Esencia, Riviera Maya

While visiting Cozumel, one of the most exceptional options just across the water on the Riviera Maya is Hotel Esencia — a property I know well from booking clients there over the Christmas period. Originally a private estate, it retains that wonderfully understated, residential feel, combined with impeccable service and a true sense of privacy that’s increasingly rare in this part of Mexico.

Set along a pristine stretch of coastline between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, it offers a far more refined alternative to larger resorts, with beautifully designed suites and villas, a strong focus on wellness, and a calm, exclusive atmosphere throughout.

By booking Hotel Esencia with me, you can enjoy VIP benefits, including:

  • Complimentary room upgrade (subject to availability)

  • Daily breakfast for two

  • Resort or spa credit (value varies by season/package)

  • Early check-in / late check-out (subject to availability)

  • Personalised welcome amenities

It’s exactly the kind of property I recommend for clients looking for something discreet, design-led, and genuinely luxurious — and I’m looking forward to finally experiencing it first-hand.

Frequently Asked Questions: Norwegian Luna & Miami Cruise Departures

Is it worth arriving in Miami the day before a cruise?

Yes — and I would always recommend it. Arriving the day before removes the stress of flight delays, allows you to enjoy a more relaxed start to your trip, and gives you the opportunity to experience Miami properly rather than rushing straight to the port.

Which hotel is best for a pre-cruise stay in Miami?

For convenience alone, the InterContinental Miami is one of the best options. Its location overlooking Biscayne Bay and close proximity to PortMiami makes it ideal for an overnight stay before embarkation — particularly if you’re looking for ease and potential ship views.

What is The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line?

The Haven is Norwegian Cruise Line’s “ship-within-a-ship” concept — a private enclave offering suite accommodation, dedicated dining, a lounge, pool area and concierge service. It’s the closest equivalent to The Retreat on Celebrity or Queens Grill on Cunard.

Is Norwegian Luna worth booking for an inaugural cruise?

If you enjoy being among the first to experience a new ship, absolutely. Inaugural sailings often come with a unique atmosphere, elevated service levels, and a sense of occasion that you don’t always find on established itineraries.

What are the best flight options from the UK to Miami?

Direct flights from London Heathrow are the most convenient, with British Airways and American Airlines both offering multiple daily departures. For a smoother experience, I always recommend travelling down to London the night before.

What are the benefits of booking with The Private Traveller & Fora Travel?

Booking through The Private Traveller gives you access to VIP perks such as room upgrades, daily breakfast, hotel credits and flexible booking support — often at the same rate you would find online. You also benefit from personalised itinerary planning and ongoing price tracking.
