A Luxury Ecuador and Colombia Itinerary with a Galápagos Cruise
As I often say in travel itinerary blogs, I love visiting new countries for new experiences, but also revisiting those that have already left a lasting memory. If those can be combined with new ways to travel, like different airlines or cruise experiences, visiting new hotels etc. then that for me forms the perfect trip.
A December journey combining first-time stays and a new cruise experience
This trip will span three/four countries - starting with a short stop overnight in London UK, transiting through the USA (Miami) then visiting Ecuador (which is a return for me) and then finally Colombia. Five different locations, five different hotels, and four different airlines. All of the locations where I will stay (other than the now very familiar Sofitel London Heathrow), are new, but all of the airlines are repeat experiences, some travelled with much more often than others. In order of frequency, this is British Airways, American Airlines, LATAM then Avianca.

Flight Recommendations
Start in style with premium cabins and seamless transfers
To get to Ecuador from the UK, like a lot of South America, I found the two main options were to either fly via Madrid with BA/Iberia or via Miami with British Airways/American Airlines - you’ll spot a OneWorld theme here! We opted to fly with BA from Edinburgh to London, an overnight stop, then onwards with British Airways to Miami. There we will connect to an American Airlines flight direct to Guayaquil for Galapagos; the other likely entry point being Quito in Ecuador. Having already been there, we thought it was best to try somewhere new, but we also now need to be very considerate of high altitude with ‘Mrs’ The Private Traveller.
Once we’re in Ecuador, flights onto the island of Baltra in the Galapagos are with LATAM, an airline we have flown with extensively when in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile - but disappointingly they exited the OneWorld alliance a number of years ago. Once we’re back in Guayaquil for another overnight stop before flying onto Colombia, these routes were best served by Avianca - Guayaquil to Bogota, then an onward connection to Cartagena in Colombia. The return from Cartagena, is the mirror image with AA and BA, albeit no overnight stop in London.
All the services we have flown before, but I’m looking forward to trying out the new First Wing at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 (not long reopened after a makeover); American Airlines and Avianca in Business Class, and now the best class available on domestic routes with LATAM, Premium Economy. Having been to the newly reopened British Airways lounge in Miami International a few weeks ago, albeit on the return journey, I’m looking forward to going back and experiencing that incredible new design and service in the Concorde dining room. The return flights are perfectly timed to a pre-boarding dinner in the lounge to maximise sleep on the overnight flight back to London.

Where to Stay in Guayaquil
Hotel del Parque – Why I Chose This Property
Set within the beautifully restored grounds of Guayaquil’s Parque Histórico, Hotel del Parque offers a tranquil and elegant retreat away from the city’s commercial centre. For this itinerary, Hotel del Parque is the perfect first stop in Ecuador — ideal for unwinding after long-haul travel, adjusting to the climate, and easing into the journey before continuing deeper into the country and on to the Galápagos.

Things to Do in Guayaquil Ecuador
Riverside promenades, historic districts and a gentle introduction to Ecuador
Guayaquil is often seen simply as a gateway to the Galápagos, but it rewards a short stay in its own right. Set along the banks of the Guayas River, Ecuador’s largest city blends historic neighbourhoods with revitalised waterfront spaces, offering a relaxed and welcoming introduction to the country. For this itinerary, Guayaquil provides an easy transition after long-haul travel — a chance to explore, adjust to the climate, and enjoy Ecuadorian culture before continuing on to the islands and beyond.
Stroll along Malecón 2000, Guayaquil’s revitalised riverfront, home to gardens, monuments, museums and cafés overlooking the Guayas River
Explore Las Peñas, the city’s oldest neighbourhood, known for its colourful wooden houses, cobbled streets and artistic atmosphere
Climb Cerro Santa Ana for sweeping views across the city and river, particularly atmospheric at sunset
Visit Parque Seminario (Iguana Park), where resident iguanas roam freely beneath shaded trees in the city centre
Discover Ecuadorian history and architecture at Parque Histórico Guayaquil, combining restored buildings, wildlife and cultural exhibits
Take a river cruise on the Guayas, offering a relaxed perspective of the skyline and waterfront
Enjoy local coastal cuisine, including ceviche and encebollado, in traditional restaurants or modern dining spots
Use Guayaquil as a smooth gateway to the Galápagos Islands, with easy onward connections and a comfortable overnight stop before cruising
Boutique Cruise - ViaNatura’s Mega Catamaran Hermes Galapagos
Ultra-luxury expedition cruising through the world’s most extraordinary natural laboratory
The Galápagos Islands have long been one of the world’s most extraordinary destinations for wildlife and nature-led travel, but experiencing them in true luxury has historically required compromise. The launch of Hermes Mega Catamaran changes that entirely, introducing a new benchmark for ultra-luxury expedition cruising in this remarkable archipelago.
As the newest and most exclusive yacht operating in the Galápagos, Hermes offers an intimate, design-led experience with just a handful of expansive suites, all featuring private balconies and dedicated butler service. Life on board is deliberately unhurried, blending refined comfort with immersive exploration — from guided island excursions and wildlife encounters to relaxed afternoons on deck, taking in the ever-changing volcanic landscapes.
What sets Hermes apart is its ability to deliver a mega-yacht level of luxury while remaining fully compliant with the strict environmental protections of the Galápagos. Days are spent exploring remote islands with expert naturalist guides, snorkelling alongside sea lions and turtles, and observing iconic species in their natural habitat, while evenings return guests to an atmosphere more akin to a private yacht than a traditional expedition ship.
For this itinerary, the Hermes Mega Catamaran represents not just a cruise, but the centrepiece of the journey — a once-in-a-lifetime experience that combines exploration, conservation and exceptional comfort in one of the most unique destinations on Earth.

Hotel Casa Pestagua Cartagena
Tucked behind an unassuming façade in Cartagena’s historic walled city, Casa Pestagua is one of the most exclusive boutique hotels in Colombia. This former 17th-century aristocratic mansion has been exquisitely restored, retaining its grand courtyards, sweeping staircases and period details, while offering a level of privacy and refinement that feels closer to a private residence than a traditional hotel.
For this itinerary, Casa Pestagua provides a wonderfully intimate contrast to the energy of Cartagena’s streets — an elegant retreat where days begin slowly, afternoons are best spent by the pool or in the spa, and evenings unfold effortlessly within the Old Town.

Things to Do in Cartagena
Colonial history, Caribbean culture and easy coastal escapes
Cartagena is a destination that rewards time, and for this itinerary it appears twice — once on arrival into Colombia, and again after a restorative stay on the Barú Peninsula. Splitting the city stay in this way allows for a more relaxed pace: the first visit is ideal for immersion in the historic Old Town, culture and cuisine, while the return stay offers a familiar and elegant base to ease back into city life after days spent by the Caribbean Sea. Staying in Cartagena on either side of Barú creates a natural rhythm to the journey, balancing energy and exploration with calm, coastal downtime.
Wander the UNESCO-listed Walled City, exploring colourful streets, historic plazas and centuries-old fortifications
Visit Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, Cartagena’s imposing hilltop fortress, for panoramic views and insight into the city’s strategic past
Spend time in Getsemaní, the city’s creative quarter, known for street art, lively cafés and an authentic local atmosphere
Enjoy sunset drinks along the city walls, particularly around Plaza de los Coches and Café del Mar
Discover Cartagena’s culinary scene, from refined dining to casual ceviche bars and late-night street food
Take a boat trip to the Rosario Islands or Barú for white-sand beaches and crystal-clear Caribbean waters
Visit historic churches and museums, including the Palace of the Inquisition and Convent of La Popa
Unwind with a spa experience at your hotel or nearby luxury properties after a day exploring on foot
Hotel Las Islas Barú
Set on the untouched Barú Peninsula, just off the coast of Cartagena, Hotel Las Islas is a true escape into nature, where eco-luxury meets barefoot Caribbean living. Elevated among mangroves and jungle, with private beach access and sweeping views across the turquoise sea, the resort feels deliberately removed from everyday life, yet remains easily accessible from the city.
For this itinerary, Las Islas provides a perfectly placed pause between two stays in Cartagena — a chance to slow the pace, reconnect with nature and enjoy a more relaxed rhythm before returning to the energy of the Old Town. Days here are best spent moving between beach, pool and spa, with evenings defined by warm sea air, gentle sunsets and the sound of the jungle coming alive after dark.
