How to Get There & Get Around
I flew with British Airways via London Heathrow, arriving in the main Oslo Airport (Gardermoen IATA code: OSL), which opened in 1998, replacing the previous main airport, Oslo Fornebu Airport, which closed the same day. It’s located about 35 km (22 miles) north of central Oslo, and is Norway’s largest airport and the main international gateway. It featured a sleek, Scandinavian design with sustainable architecture, and was really easy to navigate on both arrival and departure, despite the lateness of the return BA flight. It’s also home to SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and Norwegian Air Shuttle hubs.
One of the best pieces of advice I was given for travelling to Amerikalinjen (and indeed it would work for all of the hotels I stayed at) was to take the airport train - Flytoget. This worked really well with the service taking just about 20 minutes, and so easy to get tickets for and a very nice journey overall. It stops once at Lillestrøm before getting to Oslo Central Station, which is literally opposite Amerikalinjen - I got there in just a couple of minutes. When I went back to the airport, although it could have been a walk too from The Thief to the next stop at Nationaltheatret (The National Theatre), I took an Uber, which tended to be readily available in the city centre. Watch out that there is both a National Theatre metro station as well as the train station, just next door to one another, but do have distinct entrances.
