Hotel Accommodation:  Luxurious, elegant and so wonderfully comforting

With only 100 rooms, the Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square is such a wonderful combination of outstanding accommodation in an incredible building, yet it retains a small, intimate feeling too, despite the scale.

There is a choice of four guestrooms (Superior, Deluxe, Premier & Executive), a one-bedroom Deluxe Suite and then four Speciality Suites (Four Seasons Heritage, Trinity Heritage, Grand Heritage & Royal Garden). There are also nine different residences to choose from, with one to four bedrooms, and some with private terraces and views to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

Having booked through Classic Travel and Virtuoso, I was upgraded to the Cooper Suite, one of the Trinity Heritage Suites. At 100 m2 (or over 1,000 sq. ft.) this was more like a residence than a hotel suite; just absolutely spectacular in design, layout, style and comfort.

A Landmark Reborn In The City’s Historic Heart

Set in the heart of the City, overlooking Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, Ten Trinity Square this year celebrates its 100-year anniversary. Ten Trinity is the starting point for discovering London’s historic past, alongside its exhilarating present. As impressive inside as out, this famous five-star hotel remains the centre of attention, as a new chapter begins in its history.

Facilities & Service at The Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity

With a choice of on site restaurants, the outstanding Spa and Hammam, the Rotunda for cocktails and drinks and (seasonally) the rooftop lounge Bloom, with shops, event space, two full-sized ballrooms and a fitness centre there is everything you could possibly need in this hotel with history.

I’ve broken down the key facilities and services and shared my opinion on them below:

Rooms/suites

The Cooper Suite was no ordinary room. There was a large entrance hall through double entrance doors (one half of the door had a feature whereby you could leave laundry or pressing to be collected or delivered without being interrupted). As with the whole suite, ceilings were high and lots of original features took pride of place. The bedroom was spacious with a huge king-sized bed as well as a vanity area and sofa/coffee table relaxation space too. It was a wonderful combination of light grey walls, dark wood panelling, simple grey drapes but with patterned rugs and lots of unique ornaments and features too.

Next to the main bedroom was the living and dining area, spacious too with the ceilings and, if you needed it, a great entertaining space with multiple sofas and chairs, dining for four guests, a writing desk for work as well as a large sideboard which housed mini bar, coffee maker, drinks and snacks etc. Such a great welcome with a bottle of red wine (not my thing unfortunately, I’m more of a sparkling white/champagne/Prosecco fan), patisserie in the form of a royal crown, fresh fruits and mineral water etc.

With a huge entrance hall that ran the length of the suite, split on one side with the bedroom and lounge area, with the bathroom and dressing area on the other, this also had a guest WC off. So much space, so beautifully presented, and such a wonderful suite to relax in; as well as enjoying the rest of what I thought was one of my favourite hotels ever.

Levels of Comfort

From entering the suite, you entered into such a serene, wonderfully fragrant space where everything had been prepared and designed to such a level of excellence. There was so much space throughout with massively high ceilings in every room, which gave a majestic feel to the entire suite. The suite was serviced twice daily, and after coming back from dinner I found all the lighting had been adjusted, the bed prepared with slippers and mineral water waiting at each side of the bed.

Bathroom

Everything about this suite was really amazing, but the bathroom for sure had the wow factor. Located off a large dressing room area, there was a separate WC (Japanese style electronic Toto toilet) and wash hand basin, with a separate large bathroom. At one end there was a spectacular large soaking tub surrounded and framed by gold mosaic, at the other end was a his’n’hers (or in our case, had Mr come with me, a his’n’his) walk-in double shower. In the middle were double sinks on a huge marble vanity unit. Toiletries were by Codage Paris and there was everything you could possibly need - hand cleansing gel and hand/body lotion at every sink, body wash, shampoo and conditioner (twice) in the showers, and extra bath salts, soap and shampoo bar as well as a loofah at the large soaking tub.

Breakfast

There was the choice of either an in-suite breakfast or taking this in the Rotunda Lounge. On the actual Rotunda Bar itself and beside on both sides was an extensive buffet (the Ten Trinity Market Table). This was an extensive selection of locally sourced (and carefully selected to represent English culture) of hand crafted viennoiseries and breads, cold cuts and cheeses, warm items and pies, vast selection of yoghurts, pralines, cereals, nuts and juices. Add to this your choice of hot beverage and then a hot dish of either The English Landmark (full English breakfast), Hass Avocado on Toast, Eggs Royale or Benedict, Trinity French Toast or Pancakes.

A great combination of all the market table produce to combine with, for me was, the avocado on toast. Sitting in the slightly sunken centre of the Rotunda was an experience in itself, I couldn’t help just gazing up in awe at its spectacular ceiling, but also remembering what this would have been like when it was indeed originally the London Ports Authority Headquarters and I believe the Rotunda was where hundreds of people would be paying their duties on goods that were landing in the port.

Restaurant & Bars

Whenever I visit a new hotel, I always like to try out as many restaurant and bar options as possible. With such a good choice at FS Ten Trinity, as above I was able to experience the wonderful breakfast in the Rotunda Lounge, pre-dinner cocktails at the Rotunda Bar, followed by an excellent dinner at Mei Ume, their Japanese and Chinese fusion restaurant.

Design & Architecture

Originally the headquarters building of the Port of London Authority (opened in 1922), this building was designed by Sir Edwin Cooper. Hence the naming of the suite I was lucky enough to experience, the Cooper Suite and actually the name of one of our Boston Terriers. Built originally in the Beaux-Arts style, its Romanesque facade gave it a unique grandeur, which was only replicated inside with the large glass dome above the central rotunda. Meant to emulate nearby St. Paul’s, today the Rotunda is a wonderful centrepiece, multi-use from breakfast in the morning, afternoon teas, evening cocktails as well as a lunch and dinner venue too.

What about The City, London location?

Close to the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, the hotel is in an unenviable position in the heart of the City of London. I flew into London City, and had BlackLane take me straight to the hotel, but this can also be arranged by the hotel itself, and both Heathrow and Gatwick airports would be options too, albeit further away (probably 70 or 80 minutes respectively, versus just 25 minutes or so for London City. I love to do lots of different things when in London, stay in different areas etc. but I always think it’s good to walk along different parts of the Thames river too.

Some of the top activities I’d recommend at Four Seasons Ten Trinity are:

Spa & Wellness at Ten Trinity

I had booked a spa experience in advance (Prestigious Cocooning) and I will write about this in a lot more detail as a separate spa review. As well as spa treatments (mine was a full Hammam wonder and a Ten Trinity Autograph experience), there are facial, body and general hammam treatments, as well as massages and additional enhancements like a back, neck and shoulder massage, express facial or body exfoliation.

As well as there being a spa shop and hair salon, the hydrotherapy area is one of the best I’ve seen and would definitely merit inclusion if I do another article for Travel and Spa Magazine on the best 5 Unique Hotel Spas in the Heart of London / London Luxury Subterranean Hotel Spas. Another contender would have to be The Mandarin Oriental Spa which I visited soon afterwards.

Food and Drink at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity

Such a choice in this luxury hotel, with the general Rotunda Lounge and Bar for all day-dining, two specialty restaurants, in-room dining and a seasonal cocktail bar (Bloom) on the rooftop (only open from May).

Dining options at Four Seasons Hotel London Ten Trinity were:

Rotunda Lounge and Bar

The Rotunda Lounge and Bar was central to the hotel, and very much the centre of the original Ports building too. There was a sunken seated/dining area in the middle and surrounded by relaxed seating on the ground level and the wonderful Rotunda bar. Such a flexible space throughout the day, from serving breakfast in the morning, to then enjoying pre-dinner cocktails at the bar in the evening.

Mei Ume (Chinese & Japanese)

With only staying one night (I really wish I’d stayed longer to be able to enjoy more of the facilities) Mei Ume was my choice of restaurant. A great fusion between Chinese and Japanese food, which you could mix and match with abandon. Great for vegetarians, and I mixed edamame beans with salt flakes to start, with Sichuan pickled vegetable dumplings to start, followed by vegetarian maki sushi, before an olive fried rice (minus the white fungus) to finish. What a wonderful ambience in the restaurant, excellent service and a lovely setting. Very, very highly recommended.

La Dame De Pic London (French)

On the other side from Mei Ume, sharing an entrance but with two different welcome desks, was the Two-Michelin starred French restaurant La Dame De Pic London. I was only able to glance at the surroundings which were equally as impressive as Mei Ume, and the difference here I believe is that all menus were tasting style of different lengths and prices. I was initially drawn to Mei Ume, so I didn't check out vegetarian menu options, but I am convinced they would have offered these too. Maybe on a future visit to this hotel, which I am very minded to do, I’ll try this option for lunch or dinner.

Highlights of our stay

There were so many highlights of the stay at the but here are just a few of the key points, which I hope you find a useful summary.

  • The welcome - so friendly right from the doorstep.

  • Excellent check-in - although the room was not ready as I arrived early, getting the upgrade to the Cooper Suite was so worth the wait. Gave me time to really enjoy the Spa.

  • The Cooper Suite - wonderful accommodation, more like the size of a self-contained apartment.

  • The Spa - my treatment was amazing (Prestigious Cocooning) with such a great therapist.

  • Wellness - the swimming pool, vitality pool, poolside sauna and steam were a wonderful place to relax.

  • Having the Hammam Suite is such a wonderful addition to the Spa.

  • The Rotunda - such an incredible part of the building and great for breakfast and cocktails.

  • Breakfast - a great experience with a combination of a sumptuous buffet with all hot food to order too.

  • The history of the building - such an amazing repurposing into this spectacular hotel and residences.

Areas for improvement

Wherever we stay, I do always like to look at the positives on any property we stay in, and airlines we fly with etc. but sometimes you can’t help but notice things that (for me, but I realise this is always personal) might have made for a better stay.

  • I think it’s fair to say that the only thing that would have improved this trip would have been to stay longer. Just one night in the utterly spectacular Cooper Suite was not enough.

Would I stay here again?

In a flash without any hesitation. Depending on where you want to be, it’s not the most centrally located say for most theatres or shows, but with London being so well serviced by the Tube, buses, Uber and taxis etc. nowhere is really too far. It was such a wonderful experience from start to finish, and I would love to experience it again, but for longer.

My final thoughts on The Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity

A perfect stay in a hotel group that I’ve really come to love. I think our first experience of a Four Seasons was originally in Mexico City, but I’ve been to many more locations since and have enjoyed each of them.

Have you stayed at Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity before or any other Four Seasons Hotel or Resort? I’d love to hear your own thoughts and opinions on it as well as your impression of London as a destination. There is another Four Seasons hotel in London at Park Lane, very much somewhere I would like to try on a future visit to London. Looks very different and with less of a spa focus that Ten Trinity, but equally in such a wonderful central London location.
