Flying to Palma with British Airways

Although I’ve visited mainland Spain and the Canary Islands quite a few times, I’ve never visited any of the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, Formentera, & Cabrera). Mallorca, or Majorca, has been on the list for a while, and since noticing the long awaited opening of Sun Bunyola, I knew it was now time to go.

Best places to stay in Mallorca: Son Bunyola

We’re only there for a week (there is a weekly only direct flight from Edinburgh to Palma), so we’re splitting our time between Son Bunyola (three nights) before moving onto Finca Serena Mallorca (four nights), somewhere else that has been on my travel radar for a while. The split of nights wasn’t indicative of which we might prefer, other than with a reasonably latish booking, this was the only combination available.

We’ve been to other Virgin Limited Edition properties (the one that always stands out for us so far is Kasbah Tamadot in the Atlas Mountains), so I’ve very interested to see how Son Bunyola compares.

With booking reasonably late on, there wasn’t huge availability for nights that would suit us, so the choice of room selection was taken out of my hands. There was only one option, which I’m sure will suit extremely nicely, which is the choice of one of two (only) Tower Suites. These are the most prestigious on the property, and both come with their own (no surprise) private tower with seating and sun loungers. There was the choice of either a round or square tower, one is original 13th Century and the other a much newer 19th Century option. Both suites looked amazing, but I opted for the square tower option, only that I sometimes find that round rooms (as the suite below matches being in the same tower) can be a bit quirky.

I understand that Richard Branson has owned this property for the last 20 years, so it's taken a bit of time to get it opened in only 2023. There is only one restaurant at the moment (Sa Terrassa) with a second one about to open (Sa Tafona). It’s a bit unfortunate timing in that the second restaurant won’t open until June, so we’ll miss it on this trip, but will hopefully be able to check out how it will look.

Staying in Mallorca: Finca Serena Mallorca

We had thought before about coming to Mallorca and a stay at Finca Serena, but I was never able to get a booking that suited our dates. The location really attracted me, and the obvious laid back atmosphere of the hotel being located within a 40-hectare estate right in the countryside, surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, and lavender. With the on site Jacaranda restaurant (and a Two-Michelin Star chef I believe), we’re looking forward to country relaxation with great food and relaxation and treatments from the Único Spa with regular yoga sessions for me.

Again, like Son Bunyola, being so popular there wasn’t an extensive choice of rooms and suites (I really loved the look of the private Villa Serena, with its own pool and garden) but there was still the option of the next best category, the Suite Garden. These are two rooms, a separate bedroom and living space, with a terrace and private porch with (alleged) privileged views over the Estate and the Pla de Mallorca (the plain of Majorca).

Things to do in Mallorca

A Day in Palma

As much as we’re not seeing this as a vacation with lots of city centre sightseeing, we couldn’t visit a new island like Mallorca without visiting what’s meant to be a very interesting capital, Palma. Either we will go early before the train leaving for Port de Sóller, or we’ll go back another day and check out some of the key sights like the Catedral de Mallorca, the Castell de Bellver, Passeig des Born, the Pilar & Joan Miro Foundation, Palau de l’Almudaina, and Sa Llotja.

Port de Sóller Historic Train & Tram

A friend had told us about this historic wooden train and tram (which first started in 1913), which initially goes from Palma to Sóller by train, with an onward connecting tram from Sóller to Port de Sóller by tram. There are various departures throughout the day from Palma, and various returns too. Online booking (only for the full journey departing Palma or Sóller) is available a week in advance, with a discount.

Patiki Beach

Funnily enough, as we had just been told about the above train and tram to Port de Sóller, we watched the Fred Sirieix TV programme (Remarkable Places to Eat - Series 4, Episode 2) with Ravneet Gill, which featured a number of (remarkable) restaurants on the Mallorcan island. Patiki Beach was one that caught my eye, and we immediately went online to book a table during our stay. This should work out really well in that we will get the train and tram there and back.
