Luxury Staycation in Edinburgh: A Gleneagles Townhouse & Fingal Experience
Introduction
Despite visiting countless luxury hotels worldwide, Scotland remains one of our most underrepresented destinations. During Covid, when Scotland had some of the strictest travel restrictions, we took the opportunity to explore more within the country. One of these trips was a return to Gleneagles in Auchterarder, a place we hadn't stayed at for years. You can read that hotel review here.
That review is a few years old, and hopefully now both the format and content of my newer hotel reviews are much better - I’d love to get your thoughts. I did go back to Gleneagles for a spa day (you can read why next) and this review is here.
A couple of years ago, my husband [“Mrs” TPT] had thought he was phoning the Gleneagles Townhouse to buy a gift voucher for me to visit their spa, for the Highland Healer treatment experience. Of course from then on, when he explained where it was for, when I booked (through the centralised Playground Planners team) I never mentioned the Townhouse, nor did they. I was so looking forward to the treatment day (which included lunch etc.), but when I turned up to the Townhouse, I was advised on the door that only hotel guests or members could visit. We then realised between us that there was just confusion from the start. That day, with actually my spa day having been booked for the main Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder (over an hour’s drive away), I opted just to have an impromptu day spa visit to OneSpa at The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, and I then still had my Highland Healer to look forward to an another time.
I did go months later, and you will see from my review that I had an exceptional visit. I think the disappointing hotel stay had a lot to do with the Covid restrictions - like we couldn’t have an alcohol inside, had to be out of the restaurants by 9pm, and had to make an appointment to use the swimming pool - the only option we could get during our stay was late evening, so we didn’t bother. Aside from school holidays, where Gleneagles will get very busy, I’d like to go back and see what the overall experience is like now.
I had assumed that The Strong Rooms at Gleneagles Townhouse were still exclusive to guests and Club members. That exclusivity was part of the reason I wanted to stay. However, after booking, I realised this policy changed in 2024 - now, treatments are open to all. The Strong Rooms at Gleneagles Townhouse are a testament to the building's rich history and innovative transformation.Originally serving as the bank vaults of the British Linen Company, these spaces have been meticulously repurposed into a state-of-the-art wellness centre. Retaining the original vault doors, the design seamlessly blends historical architecture with modern luxury. Guests and members can now enjoy cutting-edge facilities, including a cryotherapy chamber and infrared sauna, all within the atmospheric setting of these former vaults.
What exactly is a staycation?
Some define it as holidaying at home with day trips, others as simply staying within the same country. For us, it means enjoying a luxury escape just a few miles from home, offering a fresh perspective on Edinburgh. ‘Mrs’ TPT has apparently such an aversion to the idea of a cruise (that could be a blog post in itself), that I think staying on Fingal might be the closest I get!
While we love exploring far-flung destinations, there’s something special about experiencing a luxury stay right here in Edinburgh, rediscovering the city we call home with fresh eyes.

How to Get to Edinburgh
Seamlessly Connecting Edinburgh Airport, the City Centre, and Leith’s Luxury Stays
This is an easy one for us, with living in Edinburgh, and even easier now with Edinburgh trams not only connecting the airport to the city centre but all the way down to Leith too. There is literally a tram stop right outside the Gleneagles Townhouse (St. Andrews Square) and again for Fingal (Port of Leith).

Edinburgh is very well serviced by both domestic flights from London and other parts of the UK, but also by many international flights too. The Edinburgh Trams system is a sustainable and energy-efficient mode of transport, running on 100% renewable electricity to reduce carbon emissions. By encouraging a shift from cars to public transport, it helps cut congestion and improve air quality, supporting Edinburgh’s goal of becoming a net-zero city by 2030. So easy to connect, with the airport stop right outside as you arrive, or easy to get you back there too for a return flight.
