Where to Stay: Oslo’s Finest Hotels
There were three hotels that immediately came onto my radar for Oslo, and having the opportunity to be there for a few days, it made sense to try them all. These were:
Amerikalinjen
Sommerro
The Thief
Another option that I wasn’t able to fit in on this trip, but which I will keep for the next, was the Grand Hotel Oslo too. That one was located right on Karl Johans Gate, one of the main streets in Oslo connecting Central Station through to the Royal Palace.
In terms of the ones I did visit, once I post the blogs you will see my detailed hotel reviews below, but here is a very quick summary.
My first stop in Oslo was Amerikalinjen, a beautifully restored former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line. Located right by the central station, it’s a boutique hotel with soul — blending heritage architecture, contemporary Nordic interiors, and a restaurant meets café that feels more Brooklyn than Bjørvika. With elegant rooms, superb soundproofing, and a secret cocktail bar downstairs, it made the perfect base for exploring the city on foot.
Next, I checked into Sommerro — a glamorous Art Deco revival set in Oslo’s former electrical headquarters. With grand staircases, vintage mosaics, and a rooftop pool overlooking the city, it’s every bit the design-lover’s dream. The rooms are richly layered with velvets and wood panelling, while the service strikes just the right balance between polished and playful. It’s a destination in itself, from the historic public baths to the buzzing restaurant scene.
My final stay was at The Thief, Oslo’s sleekest waterfront hideaway, tucked away on the art-filled Tjuvholmen peninsula. Bold, contemporary design meets moody Nordic glamour here — with rooms opening onto private balconies, many overlooking the fjord. It feels quietly exclusive, with curated artwork, a serene spa, and one of the city’s best breakfast spreads. A perfect retreat to end my Oslo journey, just steps from the Astrup Fearnley Museum and the buzzing Aker Brygge promenade.
Once the headquarters of the Norwegian America Line, Amerikalinjen is now one of Oslo’s most atmospheric boutique hotels — and my first stop in Norway.
